Jeremiah Clarke – Suite in D
Jeremiah Clarke (c. 1674–1707) was an English Baroque composer and organist, best known for his ceremonial and trumpet music, including the famous Prince of Denmark’s March (often called the “Trumpet Voluntary”). His music reflects the grandeur and brilliance associated with English court and chapel traditions at the turn of the 18th century.
The Suite in D is characteristic of Clarke’s festive style, featuring bright fanfare-like themes, lively dance movements, and dignified slow sections. The key of D major—well suited to natural trumpets—gives the work a radiant and celebratory sound.
In this arrangement for three trumpets, timpani, and organ, the suite gains additional splendor and resonance. The trumpets provide brilliance and ceremonial strength, the timpani reinforce the rhythmic vitality and grandeur, and the organ supplies a rich harmonic foundation. The result is a festive and stately work, ideal for both concert and ceremonial occasions.
